As you know, your presentation was the culmination of a week-long program in which our students were outfitted with "disabilities" and expected to participate in regular school activities. The goal, of course, is to foster empathy for others with different abilities by "walking a mile" in their shoes. Your inspiring message (delivered with grace and wit!) was the perfect ending to our students' experience. They were encouraged to look beyond external appearance and recognize that everyone has something special to offer. Thank you for the outstanding performance you gave at our school. Your themes: choices and consequences, the incredible power of setting goals, and winners don’t quit are a timeless reminder our fifth and sixth grade students found easy to understand and apply to their own lives.
Your storytelling abilities and humorous anecdotes kept their interest through the whole hour. The fact that you talk about you disabilities openly and honestly really speaks to today’s youth. When you described how, for years following your accident, routine tasks become major projects, our students realized that they too can overcome their own obstacles, if they just try hard enough. Many students (and teachers too!) walked away from your presentation feeling empowered to set goals and work hard to achieve them.
I am sure that all those attending your assembly left with a new awareness of the incredible power of choices. It is a tribute to you and your positive outlook on life that I heard the following comments from students after the assembly:

Robert Frost Elementary School 5th Grade

Mr. Foxx spoke to our class on Wednesday. He shared with our class details about his motorcycle accident. He also talked with us about the fact that accidents can happen to anyone, no matter who you are. The choices you make can have positive and negative effects on your life. Mr. Foxx shared how the choices he has made since his accident have made him set goals to achieve things so that he can be independent. The following are key messages that Mr. Foxx shared with our class.

Winners don’t quit is a very important saying that Mr. Foxx lives by in all that he does. ALWAYS wear a helmet when you are riding a bicycle. This is-important because the helmet can save your life if you were to fall. When you fall, get back up! Do not quit!

The following are comments from our fifth grade students:
"I thought it was great that Mr. Foxx made 50 many goals! I liked him saying ‘Never Give Up!"’

"You did a terrific job explaining to us why we should wear our helmets and you really made me think about why I should wear my helmet! "

"Mr. Foxx taught me that kids shouldn’t use drugs."

"I think that kids should take Mr. Foxx’s advice."

"I thought Mr. Foxx’s performance what great! He taught us that nobody is perfect. He also taught us that we need to be safe."

"I learned that accidents can happen to anyone!"

"I am glad that Mr. Foxx never gave up after his accident."

Mr. Foxx has a very important message and Is willing to make it fit your students needs. We are glad that he was able to share with our class.

Al Foxx has been an educational assistant in my class for the last four weeks. He has assisted special education students in making good behavior choices in the classroom setting.

Additionally, Al has given motivational speeches to the elementary students in our pod of classrooms. His messages were well received by the students. The speech in my classroom was filled with humor and very important messages that have stuck with the children. He told the children through many of his personal examples that "Winner’s Don’t Quit," and to always "Wear a Helmet."

Additionally, Mr. Foxx communicated to the children how after he had his motorcycle accident he had to learn to talk, walk and learn to drive again even after being told he would never do those things. He stressed the importance of a positive attitude, working hard, and setting goals.

After he left the comments by the children were very insightful. One eight year old boy said he felt bad, because he had imitated the way Mr. Foxx talked and walked on the playground and now that he knew the reason why he would not do this ever again. "It’s important to be nice to people no matter what they are like." A girl indicated that "heads were difficult to fix when they got hurt" and so she would always wear a helmet.

This reference letter is on the behalf of Al Foxx. I first met Al at the 2004 annual Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Conference when I co-hosted. The conference is for providers in the transportation industry including Outreach Personnel, Travel Trainers, Advocates and Consumers. Al was the speaker during our luncheon and presented information on living with a disability and the role that public transportation plays in his life. Al presented the information with humor and engaged the audience with his life experiences.

I hosted the 2005 ADA Conference in April 2005. Due to popular demand, I had Al return as the speaker during our luncheon. Al presented information that was lighthearted. Al's use of public transit puts him in a very unique position, by providing him with insight into the operation of our system.

"I enjoyed ‘Al’s speech. I felt that it was appropriate for our age group. The most vivid point I got from the speech is that things happen in a split second, and once they do, you cant change them no matter how much you want to. Along those same lines, his 'winners don’t quit' message was a good one, especially for disabled people. It gives them inspiration, I believe. The speech was great, and I feel that there was just enough comedy to make it light-hearted, but to still keep a serious theme going."

Al just did this presentation last week, so we have not received an official letter yet, but here are some comments by participants.

Terrific, funny, very deep message when you got through laughing. I thought about my attitude toward individuals with disability and prognostications all the way home.

Refreshing and renewing for those who work with individuals with disability or professionals in rehabilitation!

The winners don’t quit message was important, especially being sensitive to focusing on a person’s positives, the need for self acceptance, caution with predictive statements that either lower expectations or “put people in a box”….individual motivation needs more attention by diagnosticians…adaptive or resilient behaviors are not cut and dry.

College aged students particularly enjoyed the “humor is the best medicine” element of the talk…
Overall, people were pleased, amused and enjoyed attending this event…

Each year at Aylen Jr. High we provide a day of workshops and inspirational speakers for our students. This day falls on the last day before winter break. We provide large and small group presentations to our student body of nine hundred students. Al Foxx was our opening presenter for the seventh and eighth grade students. As the opening presenter for these students, A1 spoke in a large group capacity in our gymnasium. He spoke to 600 of our 900 students on the theme, "Winners Don’t Quit". This message, coming from Al, had a much stronger message than it would have had coming from a major league athlete. Al, himself, is quite handicapped. Although his handicaps are obvious to the eye many students and teachers responded immediately to the fact that he was talking about himself being a winner.

Students were enthusiastic about his storytelling style of presentation and responded positively to the fact he could share humor about the trials and tribulations of his own life. Our students turned in an evaluation survey at the end of the day which reinforced the positive impact Al had made on our students.

Northshore Junior High

RE: Al Foxx, Presentation at Northshore Junior High, Bothell, WA 98011

On May 2, the staff and students at Northshore Junior High were treated to an hour of soul searching and laughter. Al Foxx, who had been injured in a motorcycle accident several years ago, ambled into our gymnasium and spoke to our students about attitude, goals, and a desire to succeed. Being told by doctors that he would never walk again because of the accident, Al persevered with hours and hours of therapy, a great amount of help, and an inner desire to prove the doctors wrong.

The students listened to Al’s story, laughed at his dry humor, and pondered his difficult transition from "free spirit" to partially paralyzed, yet gutsy opportunist. Al refused to quit, and his message of determination and self-respect was well received by those listening to him. The following morning I received a couple of calls from parents who stated that their students were "very impressed" by Al’s courage and motivated by his desire to see them succeed.

His "bucket full" of self-esteem reminders offered the students practical ways to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. Each positive "tip" showed students that they can make a positive difference in their lives and in the lives of their own family members and friends.
Thank you, Al, for sharing, inspiring, and planting the seeds of a "can do" attitude in our students. We were all very impressed!

Mr. Foxx recently spoke at our October 2005 Disability Employment Awareness Month diversity program at the Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, sponsored by the Equal Employment Opportunity Office, and hosted by our People with Disabilities Special Emphasis Program.

Employees and patients at our Seattle division had the opportunity to attend Al’s performance, and each group of attendees found useful and inspirational information in Al’s presentation. Since the program, I have received an overwhelming number of positive comments about Al, and specifically about his ability to address his situation with humor and grace.

Although many of the employees in attendance are health-care providers, and daily work with disabled veteran patients; they expressed a new appreciation of their patients’ experiences, frustrations and triumphs.

Many patients (and specifically those enrolled in our alcohol and drug dependency programs) informed me that they now realized that their own problems seemed minor, when compared to Al’s challenge and successful rehabilitation. These patients mentioned that they planned to chant Al’s mantra “Winners don’t quit, winners don’t quit, winners don’t quit,” if and when they encountered obstacles during their own treatment process.

Most importantly, Al’s message served to remind us of the purpose of our event: that we recognize the intellect, skills, abilities and contributions of people with disabilities; and our commitment to helping them achieve their full inclusion in our workforce.

Dear Al,

I want to thank you for your recent humorous and informational talk on Disability Awareness to the Department of Labor and Industries. Over 220 people attended and their reviews were excellent. The story of your perseverance in your recovery was wonderfully told and I believe demonstrates what an amazing person you are.
While you are very funny guy and your personal story was fascinating, your straightforward behavioral recommendations about how to relate with respect to individuals with disabilities were most important. Agency staff with disabilities and parents and relatives of folks who are disabled said they thought they knew it all but you taught them and made them laugh at the same time.

As a Special Events Chairperson, my plan for Disability Awareness month was to offer a unique event that could educate and entertain, a large number of our staff.
While my recommendation that a comedian could educate and change behavior was at first questioned as an effective agency wide training program, all those that attended felt that the disability awareness training and the humor break in the workday was a wonderful and educational experience. Increased awareness of diversity helps our staff in their work with customers, with their families, and with their community. It is an excellent service that you offer and one any organization wishing to educate themselves on disability awareness would greatly benefit from.

My name is Jake Richardson and I am the Associate Minister at Evergreen Christian Church in Everett, Washington. I am writing in regards to a request from Al Foxx for a letter of recommendation. When Al asked me to do this, I was excited to show my appreciation to him in this way.

Let me briefly share with you how Al and I met. Al "happened" to stopped by the church to ask directions one day last summer. As I began to talk to Al, he began to brighten my day through his encouraging words and his great attitude about life. As Al shared with me, I couldn’t help but think that here is a guy who could blame God for his condition. He could be angry and deeply burdened. But through Al’s faith in God, he has turned his stumbling block into the foundation of who he is today.

As Al and I finished talking that summer day, I remember telling Al that I believe that he didn’t "happen" to pick this church to ask directions. It was God’s plan. You see, I was having a bad day and my ministry was going through rough times. Al stopped by and encouraged me and gave me hope. Instead of me ministering to him, he ministered to me.

Recently, Al spoke with our Jr. and Sr. High youth and their parents. He did a fantastic job. The youth and their parents loved him. One of the kids was overheard after wards saying "Al would be a cool guy to hang with!" Al blends his humor with his life story to make him a very likable, entertaining and edifying speaker.

I would recommend Al Foxx to come and speak to any group in your church that needs encouragement through heartfelt laughter. Invite Al to come and share with you how to be a winner and why "WINNERS DON’T QUIT!"

As a winner who didn’t quit, he has first hand experience.

Al Foxx, founder of the winners Don’t Quit Association, came to our Corporate headquarters to speak to the employees during what we call the Brown Bag lunch hour from 12 to 1. During that hour, he touched the hearts of everyone there as he shared his story of relearning to walk, talk, work, and drive a car after he survived a brain injury and partial paralysis as the result of a traumatic motor cycle accident at age 19. His humorous accounts of how people have responded to him since his accident, will delight you but at the same time cause you to examine your own response to co-workers and others with disabilities. Al knows what people with disabilities want others to know about them.
His challenge as he spoke to us was 1) to not lose heart or give up because of obstacles, 2) to appreciate our own as well as others’ differences, 3) to believe in your heart that you have the power to overcome anything and 4) to do your best to create a happy and positive environment with everyone around you. Employees and patients at our Seattle division had the opportunity to attend Al’s performance, and each group of attendees found useful and inspirational information in Al’s presentation. Many patients (and specifically those enrolled in our alcohol and drug dependency programs) informed me that they now realized that their own problems seemed minor, when compared to Al’s challenge and successful rehabilitation. Most importantly, Al’s message served to remind us of the purpose of our event: that we recognize the intellect, skills, abilities and contributions of people with disabilities; and our commitment to helping them achieve their full inclusion in our workforce.

Terrific, funny, very deep message when you got through laughing. I thought about my attitude toward individuals with disability and prognostications all the way home.

Refreshing and renewing for those who work with individuals with disability or professionals in rehabilitation!

The winners don’t quit message was important, especially being sensitive to focusing on a person’s positives, the need for self acceptance, caution with predictive statements that either lower expectations or “put people in a box”….individual motivation needs more attention by diagnosticians…adaptive or resilient behaviors are not cut and dry.

College aged students particularly enjoyed the “humor is the best medicine” element of the talk…
Overall, people were pleased, amused and enjoyed attending this event…

Northshore Junior High

On May 2, the staff and students at Northshore Junior High were treated to an hour of soul searching and laughter. Al Foxx, who had been injured in a motorcycle accident several years ago, ambled into our gymnasium and spoke to our students about attitude, goals, and a desire to succeed. Being told by doctors that he would never walk again because of the accident, Al persevered with hours and hours of therapy, a great amount of help, and an inner desire to prove the doctors wrong.

The students listened to Al’s story, laughed at his dry humor, and pondered his difficult transition from "free spirit" to partially paralyzed, yet gutsy opportunist. Al refused to quit, and his message of determination and self-respect was well received by those listening to him. The following morning I received a couple of calls from parents who stated that their students were "very impressed" by Al’s courage and motivated by his desire to see them succeed.

His "bucket full" of self-esteem reminders offered the students practical ways to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. Each positive "tip" showed students that they can make a positive difference in their lives and in the lives of their own family members and friends.
Thank you, Al, for sharing, inspiring, and planting the seeds of a "can do" attitude in our students. We were all very impressed!

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I recommend Al Foxx as a speaker for an organization or agency. Mr. Foxx recently spoke at our October 2005 Disability Employment Awareness Month diversity program at the Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, sponsored by the Equal Employment Opportunity Office, and hosted by our People with Disabilities Special Emphasis Program.

Employees and patients at our Seattle division had the opportunity to attend Al’s performance, and each group of attendees found useful and inspirational information in Al’s presentation. Since the program, I have received an overwhelming number of positive comments about Al, and specifically about his ability to address his situation with humor and grace.

Although many of the employees in attendance are health-care providers, and daily work with disabled veteran patients; they expressed a new appreciation of their patients’ experiences, frustrations and triumphs.

Many patients (and specifically those enrolled in our alcohol and drug dependency programs) informed me that they now realized that their own problems seemed minor, when compared to Al’s challenge and successful rehabilitation. These patients mentioned that they planned to chant Al’s mantra “Winners don’t quit, winners don’t quit, winners don’t quit,” if and when they encountered obstacles during their own treatment process.

Most importantly, Al’s message served to remind us of the purpose of our event: that we recognize the intellect, skills, abilities and contributions of people with disabilities; and our commitment to helping them achieve their full inclusion in our workforce.
